What documents do I need by nationality to enter Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay at the Triple Frontier?
Marco Três newsroom · edited by Annie Grellmann
Mercosur citizens usually cross with a national ID; travelers from outside the bloc generally need a passport and, depending on nationality, a visa.
If you are a citizen of a Mercosur or associate country (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru), you can generally cross between these countries using a valid national identity document, according to the immigration authorities of Argentina and Paraguay. Travelers from outside the bloc normally need a valid passport and, depending on nationality, a visa — and that rule varies a lot by country, so always confirm with the official immigration source of the destination country before you travel.
The golden rule: confirm by your nationality
At the Triple Frontier (Foz do Iguaçu, Puerto Iguazú, and Ciudad del Este), the right question isn't "what document does a Brazilian need" but "what document does YOUR nationality need to enter the destination country." Visa rules vary widely from country to country and depend on bilateral agreements. So this guide gives you the general framework and always tells you to verify with official immigration — we do not list visa rules country by country without a source.
Mercosur and associate citizens
The immigration authorities of Argentina and Paraguay recognize the following as Mercosur and associate states for travel-document purposes: Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. However, Argentina's own immigration authority notes that Venezuela currently applies the rule only with Argentina, and that Brazil applies the rule with all signatory states except Venezuela, based on reciprocity principles. In practice, for travel between Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay — the three Triple Frontier countries — the nine bloc countries listed above apply (without Venezuela).
For nationals of those countries, the rule is: you may cross the borders carrying a valid national identity document instead of a passport — unless, according to the person's nationality, a visa is a necessary requirement to enter the destination country (official text from Argentina's immigration authority).
| Direction | Document that usually suffices for a Mercosur citizen |
|---|---|
| Entering Argentina | DNI / valid national identity document (or passport) |
| Entering Paraguay | Valid national identity document (Mercosur nationals only) |
| Entering Brazil | Valid national identity document (Mercosur nationals) |
Important tip: the document must be valid, in good condition, and bear a photo that allows identification. Expired, torn, or illegible documents can be refused by the migration authority, even if they are still valid in your home country.
Brazilians traveling to Argentina and Paraguay
According to Brazil's Federal Police, for tourism trips a Brazilian may enter Mercosur and associate countries without a passport, presenting a valid identity document — the cédula de identidade (RG) or the Carteira de Identidade Nacional / CIN — issued less than 10 years ago. For travel for work, study, residence, health, or any purpose other than tourism, a passport is mandatory. The CIN, issued since 2022, also serves as a travel document within Mercosur. Documents such as a driver's license or professional-association cards are not accepted for entry. Always carry the physical document in good condition — the digital version in the gov.br app does not replace the printed document at border control.
Travelers from OUTSIDE Mercosur
For nationals of countries outside the bloc, the general rule in all three countries is: a valid passport and, depending on nationality, a visa — consular or, in some cases, on arrival. Paraguay, for example, lists the requirements as "valid passport (valid for any destination)" and "consular or on-arrival visa (only in cases where the destination country requires it)."
Because each nationality has a different rule, we do not publish the list of who needs a visa here. Check the current rule for your nationality directly at:

Entry and exit registration
In Paraguay, everyone — nationals and foreigners alike, adults and minors — is required to register their entry and exit, in a personal, in-person, and free procedure ("the entry and exit procedure has no cost") carried out only at authorized border crossings and airports. Do this registration even on a short visit to Ciudad del Este: without the entry stamp/record, you may run into problems when leaving.
Minors
Travel with minors may require additional documentation (authorization from parents/guardians), and rules vary by country and situation. Confirm the requirements for minors with the official immigration authority of the destination country before traveling.
Before you leave home
- Check the rule for your nationality on the official immigration site of the destination country (links above).
- Carry the physical, valid, good-condition document (Brazilians: issued less than 10 years ago).
- Non-Mercosur travelers: check whether you need a visa in advance.
- In Paraguay, register your entry and exit (free) at the control post.
