Do you need a passport to visit Ciudad del Este, Paraguay?
Brazilian ID works for Brazilians; travelers of other nationalities should carry a passport
Brazilian citizens don't need a passport to visit Ciudad del Este: a valid RG (national ID), the new CIN, or a passport is enough, under the Mercosur agreement. A Brazilian driver's license is not accepted as a travel document. Travelers of other nationalities should carry a valid passport to cross into Paraguay.
Under the Mercosur free-movement agreement, Brazilian citizens can enter Paraguay by presenting:
- a RG (national identity card) in good condition;
- the CIN — the new National Identity Card; or
- a valid passport.
A Brazilian driver's license (CNH) is NOT accepted as an entry document for Paraguay — it's for driving, not travel.
Day trips: people who cross the Friendship Bridge for shopping in Ciudad del Este and return the same day usually don't go through immigration control. You must still carry your ID, though — there are checks.
If you'll stay in the country or travel onward beyond Ciudad del Este, go to Paraguayan Migración at the foot of the bridge to register your entry. If you want a passport stamp (a travel souvenir), you can ask for one too.
Minors follow Brazilian travel-authorization rules when not accompanied by their parents.
Visitors of other nationalities: carry a valid passport to cross into Paraguay. Check your nationality's entry requirements with the official immigration service before traveling.
